Disney Controversy
I have done research on the "Disney Monopoly." These are not necessarily to condone Disney's movies and practices, but merely to raise awareness to the parents as to what their children are watching. I have grown up on Disney movies and had been unaware of the underlying tones in the films. Now their videos have included even more adult humor, so it is increasingly important for parents to be conscious of what their child watches and listens to, whether it be Disney or otherwise.

I had created two websites discussing the issues presented in Disney films, however the second website is no longer available for some unknown reason. It was a project discussing Gender and Race roles in Disney films and was completed as a group effort. We noted that villains are always depicted as a darker color synonymous to Black and that girls are generally damsels in distress, needing a man to save them and give them purpose. The description for the site is as follows:
Nearly every child has grown up loving Disney movies. Whether it’s because of the music, the storyline, or the characters—each movie leaves a lasting impression on the viewer.
So, it’s surprising to us that there may be subliminal messages existing in the movies that promise to evoke positive feelings. The issues of race, gender, and stereotyping may be more prevalent than we once thought.
This website serves the purpose to question Disney movies and their motives. Several researchers have searched for hidden meaning or subliminal messaging with Disney's countless shows and movies. The enterprise of Disney has grown so large and encompasses every aspect of consumerism and entertainment, with that comes the scrutiny of reporters and people looking out for the care of the world's youth.
We have organized sources challenging Disney's pure family oriented image. These controversies pertain to EDP 201 both in gender roles and the place race has in society including the way certain races are portrayed in public.
We chose to do a website because with technology today, it is one of the best ways to get the word out about topics pertaining to children. Many people surf the web to update themselves on topics of interest for their parenting. We wanted to make this an easy, accessible way for parents to be informed of the monopoly Disney has created and the messages they are giving to youth around the world.
A majority of our information came from an intriguing documentary entitled Mickey Mouse Monopoly. It is separated into 5 parts and available on YouTube.

*** I have grown up watching Disney movies and did not consider any of these effects. However, the research and information presented seems valid topics to consider when showing videos to children. It is important that teachers always consider the material shown to their students. This is not to say that Disney films should never be shown, but should be done so with guidance from the teacher to ensure that positive lessons and values are gained from the films.
