Glogster
This is a visual tool that creates online posters. You are able to choose from a variety of templates and features to complete a project. This would be excellent for visual learners to create a book report, or a state project; perfect for any need to present information through visuals. In this Glogster, I have created links to many of the Web 2.0 tools that I use on a regular basis. (To activate the links, please visit the link for Glogster above)
Timetoast
An online timeline, helped my students to put into perspective which African Americans were influential at which times. Prior to this activity, we had misunderstandings about Martin Luther King ending slavery and that Harriet Tubman knew Ruby Bridges. This timeline gave us an outlet for the information we learned about an African American we had researched and shared that information with the rest of the class. It is an excellent way to produce sequential events or display historical events/figures.
Wordle
This is an excellent word cloud generator. The site is free and provide an excellent image that students can use to associate words together. I have used this site for several reasons during our reading class! It has been used as the K and L of a KWL after brainstorming terms and names about a topic. For example, we made a Wordle for Greek Mythology after studying several Gods and Goddesses. We have also used the site for vocabulary word in a unit or a story, practicing spelling words, and completing word sorts. They can be a little challenging for students because there is not as much control; it is more of a randomization process, but can be altered based on desired color, shape, and weight of the words.
Google Maps
ROAD TRIP - this map mashup is to guide students around the state of Michigan to a variety of tourist attractions. This has been used in instruction while teaching in Michigan, but was also used for a state project with a student learning from North Carolina.
River Ran Wild - by Lynn Cherry
This excellent picture book addresses a very serious issue that occurred in the New England region in the past, but still continues today. Meant to aid visual learners to place the events of the story, this map mashup was created to coincide with a powerpoint and discussion about the book. This was used during Literacy instruction.
Mae Jemison -
While reading the biography found in the Open Court book, we followed Mae on her journey to success and outer space. We practice this activity as we sequenced her life and looked at where she traveled.
